Best Electric Longboards & Skateboards

best electric skateboards

Are they they best? That’s for you to find out. Instead of listing a number of boards, I picked a few that are great for certain requirements. There is no way of telling which boards are the best without investing over 20K, so I advise you to read a little, take it with a grain of salt and move on to do more research on the board you have in mind.

The Best thing to do is consult Reddit and ask someone who owns the board you have in mind. There is no blog out there that reviews them honestly. Reviewing skateboards is already expensive, imagine buying all these boards listed here.

Youtube is also a good source, but be careful, voice over reviews are nonsense. Make sure you get to to source and ask a lot of questions, it’s quite an investment and you really need to be sure about what you buy!

Note that electric skateboards might be illegal in your country so make sure you check the law. Over here cops can just confiscate them if they feel like it.

Anyway, here’s the result of my research. It’s generic but I just hope to give you some idea. Let’s go!

Electric Skateboard Buying Guide

Electric skateboards are gaining popularity, just like a hoverboard and electric scooters.

If you are also looking for a new exciting hobby, buying an electric skateboard is an excellent choice, but searching for an electric skateboard for the first time can be tricky. Knowledge about what to look for when choosing an electric skateboard-like its braking system, the area you ride, battery power, and skateboard’s range – is essential to make the right choice.

By following this simple buying guide, you will be on the right track of choosing the right electric skateboard to increase your enjoyment and progression. This guide will explain all the electric skateboard features to consider before making the final purchase.

If you are looking for a new fun, cool, relaxed way to enjoy this summer, then an electric skateboard is the right choice. But what things need to be considered when buying an electric skateboard? Here is a list of things to consider when buying an electric skateboard to help you out:

Motor Type

The best electric skateboard motor is dependent on the motor type it runs on. So, learning about motor type is essential when buying an electric skateboard. There are three types of motors used in electric skateboards:

  1. Hub drive motor
  2. Belt drive motor
  3. Direct drives

Hub Drive Motor

Hub drive motors are excessively used in the skateboarding industry because they have less expensive parts and are clean and comfortable to implement. These motors are quite stealthy and appeal to most skateboard riders due to their features.

Belt Drive Motor

Belt drive motors are traditional drivetrains. They have a significant amount of resistance in their system, making them harder to kick push.

Direct Drives

Direct drives motor is one of the best engines used in electric skateboarding. It allows comfortable use of swappable wheels, full urethane wheels, and free-rolling, unlike belt drive motors.

When choosing the best motor for an electric skateboard, one should consider factors like torque, custom, and noise.

Range

Choosing an electric skateboard that suits your desired range is critical. How long the battery lasts and how far you can ride is an essential aspect of an electric skateboard that has to be considered. There are several determining factors in the range of an electric skateboard. For instance, battery size is the main determining factor, while others are motor and wheel size.

Wattage

Wattage is also an essential factor to consider when buying an electric skateboard. It is necessary to understand the skateboard’s power. Higher wattage means higher energy, and lower wattage means lower skateboard capacity. For instance, if someone lives in an area with many hills and steep inclines, they need a skateboard with at least 1500W.

Speed and Charge Time Rates

Speed and charge time rates are those factors that most people know how to check. Electric skateboards tend to have a beginner and a ‘pro’ mode that regulates the maximum speed that a skateboard can achieve. If a company mentions the rate as 7 to 15 mph, it will be more like 7mph.

For the charge time rates, always go for the lower time. People who board a lot usually carry their chargers with them all the time. But unlike cellphone chargers, the electric skateboard chargers are more oversized and bulky. The charge time rate is essential because it determines the journey based on the skateboard’s range.

Deck Style and Material

Electric skateboards have decks made of two materials; bamboo or carbon fiber/ fiberglass. The deck style and material of an electric skateboard impact the rider’s performance. Both the materials have different flexibility and stiffness rate. For instance, an electric skateboard with bamboo material is more flexible than fiberglass, and a skateboard with fiberglass material is stiffer than bamboo material.

Weight Capacity

Weight capacity is an essential factor as well to consider when buying an electric skateboard. The electric skateboards have specifications that list a certain weight for the riders. Always buy a skateboard after checking its specifications and when you know that board is suitable for your weight, size, and usage.

Board Weight

Electric skateboards are fun to go from place A to B, but one must carry the board after reaching their destination. Here, determining board weight is crucial. For instance, when taking the eboard on a flight, up the stairs, or on the train, it would be nice if the board doesn’t way too heave, right? So, we recommend always consider the skateboard’s weight, so you’ll be able to carry it with you or maybe in your backpack in any circumstance. Lighter electric skateboards are better for carrying and riding.

Types of Batteries in Electric Skateboards

There are three types of batteries that are commonly used in electric skateboard:

  1. Lithium-Ion
  2. Lithium Iron Phosphate
  3. Lithium Polymer

The battery life of an electric skateboard depends upon how a rider maintains the battery. An excellent standard lithium-ion battery has a charge cycle of 500 to 1000 before it reaches 80% of its capacity. This charging cycle is according to international standards.

Lithium-Ion

Lithium-ion batteries are the most commonly used batteries not only in electric skateboards but in almost every product like cellphones, hoverboards, laptops, etc. In electric skateboards, lithium-ion batteries have numerous benefits.

Advantages

  • Lithium-ion batteries are a safer option than other batteries.
  • They have a longer life than other batteries, especially lithium polymer batteries.
  • They have microchips for safe charging and discharging.
  • Lithium-ion batteries have been showing better results for several years.

Disadvantages

  • Voltage – Sag is one of the disadvantages of lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium Iron Phosphate

Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are advanced batteries on the market, and few electric skateboard manufacturers are using these batteries in their products. Following are some of the pros and cons of lithium iron phosphate batteries;

Advantages

  • Lithium iron phosphate batteries have a long life cycle.
  • They don’t have a voltage-sag.

Disadvantages

Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are a bit expensive, so they are rarely used by electric skateboard companies; only a few use them.

Lithium Polymer

Lithium Polymer batteries, commonly known as LI-PO, have more power and a higher danger level. Due to the higher danger level, these batteries are harder to handle. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of lithium polymer batteries;

Advantages

  • They have a reasonable/affordable price.
  • They have less voltage-sag.
  • One can find them in various shapes because they do not have separate cells; instead, they are liquid.

Disadvantages

  • The life of Lithium Polymer is relatively shorter than lithium-ion and Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries.
  • These batteries are more sensitive and can be damaged due to physical engagements or the intense heat/temperature level.
  • You have to take more care of these batteries and maintain a specific temperature to keep them safe and so they last longer.
  • These batteries can catch fire easily if someone handles them inappropriately.
  • These types of batteries are not safe enough to have in your electric skateboards.

If someone maintains lithium-ion batteries properly, they can last for 300 to 1000 charge cycles before reaching 80% of their capacity. If someone uses an electric skateboard daily, then the battery life will last for about 1 to 3 years. However, the most significant life factor of a battery is how many cycles a battery can take before the capacity drops.

How Much Should I Spend on an Electric Skateboard?

If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive skateboard, then budget eboards are great. In these skateboards, there are two types of motors:

  1. A hub motor
  2. A belt motor

The motors’ main difference is that the hub motor is built inside the wheels, while in the belt motor, the gear system is directly attached to the wheels. A skateboard with a hub motor is around $400 with top speeds of 25 mph and ranges approximately 11 miles.

However, belt boards are around $800 with a top speed of 29 mph and a range of 22 miles. If you don’t want to spend much money on an electric skateboard, these budget skateboards are best.

Why Are Electric Skateboards So Expensive?

If you are going to buy an electric skateboard, you will face an important issue: ‘ price.’ Electric skateboards are motorized boards controlled by remote control. An electric skateboard’s speed can be changed by using a remote controller, and it can be turned to the right or left by tilting towards either direction.

The industry of electric skateboards is considered niche; however, electric skateboards’ price depends upon several factors. An electric skateboard has different parts compared to a conventional wooden board, making them expensive. Examples of those different parts are the following:

  • Batteries
  • Motor
  • Trucks
  • Deck material
  • Remote control unit
  • Electric speed controller
  • Wheels

All the electric skateboard components mentioned above contribute to the higher price.

Batteries

An electric skateboard has lithium-ion batteries, as discussed above, and a battery pack of an electric skateboard holds around 10 to 20 cells that make the battery cost about $100 to $400. However, all the electric skateboards also come with a charger, and they give a mileage of around 20 to 25km.

Motor

Batteries release a juice that powers up the motor and gives linear motion to the electric skateboard. The engines’ cost in an electric skateboard has been discussed earlier. Their price is defined by the way they are placed. Motors placed inside the wheels are cheap compared to the wheels and trucks’ motors. Any electric motor price ranges from $50 to %300.

Trucks

Trucks are an essential part of electric skateboards located under the board’s surface. These trucks range from $50 to $150.

Deck Material

The deck of an electric skateboard is made of wood and other composite materials based on brands and user adaptability. New electric skateboards in the market have decks made with carbon fiber composite that gives the deck durability and high impact strength.

Wooden decks are more flexible, and they usually cost around $50 to $250 and carbon fiber deck costs around $300 and $600.

Electric Speed Controller

Electric speed control is a speed controlling unit attached to the battery and motors. They are used to accelerate or decelerate based on the programming done. Expensive electric skateboards come with open source programming, where the user can program based on their functionality. Usually, electric speed controller units range from $70-$300.

Wheels

The wheels of an electric skateboard cost around $40-$260, depending upon the material.

How To Maintain an Electric Skateboard?

If you own an electric skateboard or thinking of buying one, then maintenance is an important part. Maintaining an electric skateboard is essential to get the most out of your electric skateboard. Like any regular skateboard, adjusting trucks, cleaning wheel bearing, checking the motor, batteries, and several other things need to be considered.

Here are some of our recommendations and easy to follow steps to maintain an electric skateboard:

Electric Skateboard Maintenance Tools

Following are the maintenance tools that are required to maintain an electric skateboard:

  • Head screwdriver
  • 9/15, 1/2, and 3/8 sockets
  • Wrench
  • Cleaning solvent
  • An old toothbrush, hairdryer, or heat gun
  • Paint scraper
  • Stanley knife
  • Sandpaper

Step 1: Cleaning the Grip Tape

To be honest it doesn’t matter but if you really need to clean it, go ahead.

The grip tape gets dirty and worn out with the passage of time and use. However, the marks of sand, dirt, and mud can be removed easily. The best way to clean the grip tape is by using an old toothbrush to loosen up anything stuck in the tape and then clean any mud with a damp cloth.

It won’t help though, grip tape will get dirty.

Replacing the Grip Tape

If an electric skateboard’s grip tape is completely worn out, it can be replaced by a new one. However, it can be a painful process. To make this process easier, grab a hairdryer and heat the portion of the tape at a time. After heating the area, grab a Stanley knife or paint scraper and remove the grip tape.

Now, grab brand new grip tape and align it to a freshly clean deck of your skateboard. Apply it carefully and ensure there are no bubbles and fold left, and finally, sand back the edges for a clean finish.

Step 2: Battery

The best maintenance tip for an electric skateboard battery is not to overcharge it. When you leave your electric skateboard on charge for a long time, it can be soaked, damaging the battery’s cells and reducing its life.

Cleaning the battery

Cleaning your skateboard’s battery is also a part of its maintenance. Use a damp cloth or microfiber fabric to remove any dust or debris from around the battery’s compartment.

Storing your Electric Skateboard

If you are not using your electric skateboard regularly, then the best practice is to charge it about 40 to 50% at constant room temperature and then store it in a dark place like a cupboard or garage.

Step 3: Maintaining the trucks of electric skateboard

The maintenance of trucks is a little bit complicated, but they can help in the long run once understood.

Adjusting Skateboard Trucks according to your riding style

Skateboard trucks are adjusted according to the riding style. If they are too loose, that will make it super hard to stay on the board without falling off. However, if the trucks are too tight, that will push hard to turn it.

For a beginner, it is crucial to tighten up the trucks than usual for a stable feel under the feet. To adjust your skateboard’s truck, just flip your board, grab a 9/16 inch wrench, and tighten or loosen the kingpin bolt. Turn the truck clockwise to tighten and anticlockwise to loosen up.

Cleaning Skateboard’s Truck

Sometimes you also need to clean your skateboard truck. To do this, remove the wheels, unscrew the trucks by using the top of the screw on the deck, remove the kingpin nut, and pull the trucks off your board. Clean the car with a cloth and repeat the process.

Common Electric Skateboard Problems

Sometimes your electric skateboard does not work correctly, so you need to replace some skateboard parts or troubleshoot them. Here are common problems that may occur in your electric skateboard:

The Battery Doesn’t Turn On

Sometimes a battery does not turn on due to water damage or trauma. When this happens, try charging your board and see the response.

The Battery Doesn’t Charge

If your electric skateboard is not charging, check if your plugging socket is working correctly. Hold the battery button for a few seconds and try turning your board on again.

Trucks and Wheels Are Misaligned

Sometimes trucks and wheels are misaligned, but you might fix this problem by realigning them. If the problem sustains, it might be possible that the boxes or wheels are damaged.

Low Range Issues

You may face low range issues in your electric skateboard because of a damaged or old battery. To resolve this issue, you need to drain the skateboard’s battery completely.

Bad Acceleration and Speed

This problem also happens due to damaged or old batteries. Try replacing your battery with a new one. If the problem continues, check whether the wheels and motor respond correctly.

Sounds When Braking

You may face this problem with your electric skateboard due to your belt issue. Try adjusting the belt by taking off the motor cap and tightening the belt.

Clicking Bearings

Clicking bearing is a regular and everyday occurrence with the drive wheels. This happens because often axle nut is too tight that causes this issue or a faulty bearing.

Enough Power

Too much power isn’t suitable for beginners. Just make sure the board you get still gives you enough energy that you enjoy yourself and skate down the street.

Common Mistakes When Buying an Electric Skateboard

Having an electric skateboard can be the coolest thing, but here are some common mistakes that have to be avoided when buying it:

Too Big and Heavy

One important thing to consider when buying an electric skateboard is to check its weight. Riders usually buy too big and bulky boards that may look really cool and go very fast, but it will definitely end up being an annoyance. It is recommended not to invest in a too big and sturdy skateboard because it becomes less portable.

Cheap Material

Avoid buying an electric skateboard made up of cheap material like plastic. It should be made of durable materials that do not easily break or crack. Most good-quality electric skateboards are made up of comparatively durable bamboo material.

Low Capacity Board

The capacity of an electric skateboard is the significance of the weight an electric skateboard can handle. Power is one thing that has to be considered when buying an e-skateboard. If you are a little bit heavy, make sure to get an electric skateboard that can carry your weight.

Wheels Too Small

It is equally important to get the right-sized wheels on your electric skateboard. Wheels that are too small will not give you the liberty to use the board on several terrains. And besides that, big wheels also provide a smooth and stable ride.

The wheels on an electric skateboard are made of rubber which can be used on any terrain type. Moreover, the rubber used on the wheels is capable of withstanding heat from the ground’s surface as well.

Wheels not Durable

Besides a long-lasting board, durable wheels are equally important as well. The right wheels give a smooth and stable ride to the rider. Several people end up paying a great deal of money on electric skateboards, and they end up with damaged wheels after only a few rides. An electric skateboard with wheels made from urethane has the potential of lasting longer.

No Customer Support/Warranty

When you buy an electric skateboard, it’s essential to ask the particular seller about their after-sale services and get a warranty. So if there are any specific electric skateboard fails or problems, you can always contact the seller or manufacturer to have it fixed or replaced by a new one.
